In Indonesian culture, the Genderuwo is depicted as mythical creatures that take the form of a dark, primate-like figure covered in black fur with a supernaturally large stature. Its face is often described as having bestial features, with piercingly dark blood-red eyes and sharp teeth lining its jaws. According to local folklore, Genderuwo is said to spawn from humans who died due to suicide, unnatural death, or bodies that were given an improper burial.
Some folklore adds, if one were to smell the scent of roasted cassavas, then it is a high indication that the Genderuwo is nearby. They often dwell within the deepest parts of bamboo forests during nightfall. They also seem to have a high attraction towards women. Different versions of folklore depict that these entities may morph to a specific person's form.
Appearance
The Genderuwo appears as a dark, large, primate (and somewhat humanoid) creature. It has thick, ruffled hair with piercing red eyes. An upper jaw can also be seen, along with blood dripping from its mouth. Ribs can be seen on his body, along with large, protruding fingernails on its hands.
Genderuwo that appears in DreadOut game is the young version that matured in DreadOut 2 game. In the second game, the Genderuwo looks bigger and taller. His tongue is sticking out, along with a tusk shape canine tooth, and very long dense dreadlocks hairs.

Should the player backtrack to the car during nightfall, the Genderuwo will be spotted somewhere near the grassy area by the riverside, below the broken bridge. It will block and guard the escape path from whoever is trying to flee from the town (in this case, the player).

Genderuwo makes sudden appearance on the road of Maung District, after Dark Linda steals Linda's phone and flees.
Act 6
Genderuwo appears guarding Ms.Siska secrecy, and Linda needs to defeat him for moving forward.

No particular strategy can be used to defeat it, as it will flick the player (Linda) with its fingers and send the player to Limbo instantly.

Trivia
- Taking its picture gives the achievement "Attack on Titan", which is a pop-culture reference to the popular manga and anime series with the same name, as the Genderuwo's size is about the size of a Titan.
- If the player is killed by the Genderuwo, the player will get the Genderuwo's Ghostpedia entry, but denying the player of the chance to get the "YOLO" achievement.
- In DreadOut 2 Act 5 one of the hallucinations in limbo shows that Genderuwo was Ms. Siska's pet used as a weapon to defeat the tree sisters. It is also revealed, Genderuwo is the one that responsible for Shelly's death. This claims is backed and told in DreadOut: The Untolds chapter 12.
